2018 - My Thirteenth Full Year of Cachetmaking...

US Airmail

"Jack Knight"

In 1921 an experiment took place to insure that airmail was faster than train mail service... to do this meant flying at night.  The experiment intaliled two planes taking off from San Francisco and two from New York City with relay planes along the route.   Seven pilots took part one died in a crash... night flying was hazzardous and the weather treacherous... The pilot that was to take the mail from Jack Knight was stuck in a snow storm... he did his planned leg of the cross country flight plus pushing on for two more that other pilots weren't available for... all the way from North Platte Nebraska  to Chicago where the mail was then taken on by other pilots to Cleveland and finally to New York City...  The crosscountry flight earned confidence enough to have the government supply funds for lighting the mail routes and kept the airmail flying!
